So, that's what the song is!!!!
Yesterday after work I went to my friend Marc's house to take a nap. Katie was there and it was only 20 minutes away on the train, so i figured a nap on the train and a nap at his house! but before the napping Katie and I were showing each other our favorite music videos from the 90's. Katie then showed me Tripping Daisy's "I Got A Girl" which is the song I've been searching for over a decade!!!!
ok, backtrack. I was obsessed with this song when I was in fifth grade! I remember being in a car somewhere with my family and this song came on and I loved it so much! then I taped it off the radio but I never got who wrote it! I would ask people if they knew the song but no one did. I was seriously starting to think I was going insane!
when the internet came along I would google the lyrics but nothing, which is stupid because the lyrics are pretty easy! Seriously, over a decade to figure out who sang this fuckin song!
my mind has been blown

george
All I want to listen to today is George Harrison. Last week I saw the Phil Spector documentary and learned that he produced the song "my sweet lord", which apparently was a well known fact. I had no idea, oh well! anyway, I remember I was obsessed with that song as a kid, like OBSESSED. Along with Ace of Base, Real McCoy and other things I was into in elementary school, I would record "my sweet lord" off the radio. It just grabbed my attention, its just a beautiful song. Despite all the religious undertones, its great.
A couple of years ago I was living with John McLean who's in dead dog now (http://www.myspace.com/deaddawgz) and he was obsessed with George. One day he cut his face out and put it on my wall and said something "like sorry , love george" i think he cut it out of my white album.

leyton buzzards
I like this song a lot because they make all different kinds of noises in the middle of the song. I need more coffee!!!! This band later on became modern romance who did bad dance singles! according to wikipedia, Morissey is quoted as saying " "There are indeed worse groups than Modern Romance. But can anyone seriously think of one?"
OUCH! well at least the buzzards rule! I wonder how many times people got them confused with the buzzcocks??

when in rome - promises
Shellshag is one of my favorite local bands and this morning while at work , When in Rome came up on my OMD radiostation and it was the song "promises" which was a song I knew! why? because Shellshag covers it! It never occurred to me that it was a cover, not sure why since they cover a lot of awesome songs like Liz Phair's "fuck and run". Both the original and the cover are both great and I'm glad to finally know who sang it first!

Don Knotts
I watched the weirdest movie at work, The Incredible Mr. Limpet. I liked it because he falls into the ocean at coney island and then fights nazis. Its kind of weird because when he becomes a fish he falls in love with a fish who was never a human.

The Moondogs made my summer
It's hot up in this joint!! Other than awful weather my summer has been marked with being obsessed with the Moondogs, this band from Northern Ireland. Its funny because my friend, Katie, is actually moving to Northern Ireland and one day we were hanging out and I was going on and about how I couldn't stop watching their video because their bass player had the cutest dimples! anyway, this whole time I thought they were Australian for some reason? (I discovered them through my friend Carrie who put them on a tape for me) then we looked it up on wikipedia and discovered they're from Northern Ireland! and that they're in this documentary on Northern Irish punk!
that's the band, and the catchiest song ever!!!!!!!! & the bassist has the cutest dimples in the entire universe
here's the documentary in its entirety, worth watching!

speedy performers
Its the 4th of July! my 2nd favorite holiday after thanksgiving. I'm so American... is that a bad thing? anyway, what's more American than Elvis Presley?
I used to hate Elvis Presley, couldn't stand his music or his face. Then one day my roommate, Adam Smasher, somehow got me into this song, "burning love" which is not only awesome its hilarious! especially if you see this video! he's obviously on uppers!
speaking of Elvis, his contemporary Jerry Lee Lewis (whom I've always preferred) has a ton of videos out there of him performing at crazy speeds! check this video out!

Empire Records Soundtrack
Today was one of those days where every single appliance of mine seemed to die! First, I couldn't even get access to the mp3s in my external hard drive and then my pre amp died. I had no way of listening to any of my music. wah! It was too hot so I needed a distraction, I watched Empire Records! I was excited because I hadn't seen it in a while and looked up some of the songs from the soundtrack!
The song that plays in the suicidal mirror scene is by the Martinis who include Joey Santiago, kick ass guitarist for the Pixies! who woulda thought? and his wife. I think the song is pretty awesome and sounds like the cranberries but with a more American Pixies feel!
One thing I didn't catch when I saw this movie way back when is the mention of the Shaggs! If I knew how to make a movie, I would make one of the Shaggs. The story behind the band itself is crazy enough for a whole movie! The father of the sisters in the band was told at a young age this his daughters would go on to make a band, and so later in life he made his daughters be in a band. The girls didn't know how to make music but they learned (sorta?). The Shaggs are a hard band to get into, its outsider rock for sure but their music is so endearing and haunting it totally grabs you! The shaggs are also briefly mentioned in the masterpiece, Like A Velvet Glove Cast in Iron by Dan Clowes!
